In Knoxville, a conclusive end to a somber chapter was reached when 28-year-old Cody William Bales received a twenty-two-year sentence for sexually assaulting his roommate's daughter. The office of District Attorney Charme Allen confirmed that, after a two-day trial held last November, Bales was found guilty of four counts of Rape and two counts of Statutory Rape.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Hector Sanchez decided to not only imprison Bales for twenty-two years but also enforce this term without the possibility of parole. The conviction stemmed from events in early 2018 when Bales, sharing an apartment with the thirteen-year-old victim and her mother, perpetrated the assault. It was further reported by the District Attorney's Office that Bales abruptly fled the scene, abandoning his belongings, yet it wasn't until years later that the victim came forward after confiding in a friend.
This delay in disclosure is not uncommon in cases involving such trauma, and the courage it takes to ultimately stand in truth cannot be understated. As prosecutors, DA Charme Allen emphasized the significance of supporting victims throughout their judicial journey, stating, per the District Attorney's Office, "As prosecutors, we connect with victims so that no survivor has to walk alone." This sentiment is particularly poignant considering that following Bales' departure, he continued on a path that led to another conviction for Statutory Rape with a different minor.
The Knoxville Police Department, represented by Det. Patty Tipton conducted a thorough investigation upon the victim's revelation, which culminated in Bales' arrest. The effects of his actions have now been formally addressed, with the imposition of both a prison sentence and the requirement for Bales to be registered under the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. He will also be subject to Community Supervision for life. Assistant Victim Witness Coordinator Lauren Ward and Legal Secretary Erin Morrison were recognized for their role in aiding the prosecution.
