Following a recent protest in downtown Lafayette, an incident of violence and a close call involving a firearm occurred near the Tippecanoe County Courthouse. The Lafayette Police Department is investigating the assault, which took place during a demonstration by the 50501 Movement yesterday. According to local authorities, a male protester headbutted a driver after a verbal confrontation, the incident then escalated when the driver retrieved a firearm from his vehicle.
The trouble began when the adult male driver, attempting to take a legal turn at the intersection of 3rd and Columbia Streets, found his path blocked by protesters gathered in the street. A back-and-forth between the driver and the protesters quickly escalated, leading to the assault. In a statement obtained by the Lafayette Police Department, it was reported that "A verbal altercation ensued between the driver and protesters."
After being headbutted, the driver's response to retrieve a gun sparked further concern amongst those at the scene. The Lafayette Police, arriving in response to the situation, detained the driver initially amidst claims that he had pointed his gun at protesters. The subsequent investigation by the authorities, however, found that he had not pointed the firearm at anyone, and he was released, as he had not committed a crime. No shots were fired during the confrontation, and the situation was de-escalated before further violence could unfold.
The police are still seeking the male protester responsible for the assault and have called for the public's assistance. They urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Lafayette Police Department at 765-807-1200. While addressing the right to peaceful assembly, the police emphasize their commitment "to protecting the safety of all community members," as affirmed by their public statement.
