LaPorte County's own Niko Cabela is currently immersed in the workings of Indiana's political machine, serving as an intern for State Rep. Jim Pressel and other members of the Indiana House of Representatives. Cabela, who recently finished his studies at Purdue University Northwest with a history degree, is using this opportunity to get a hands-on education in state government during the 2024 legislative session.
"This experience is so unique, and each day is different from the last, I love getting to know all the representatives and diving into interesting topics,” Cabela told Indiana House Republicans. In his role, Cabela engages with the public, handling correspondence with constituents and playing a key role in committee hearings and floor proceedings which allows him to tune into the pulse of civic discourse, aiding in the legislative process, and gaining a deeper understanding of the flow of state politics.
Rep. Pressel noted the value of such internships as a first step for students into the realm of public policy. He highlighted Cabela's contributions in a statement, saying, “Niko has been a wonderful addition to this session, and I can't wait to see what he does with the skills and experience he gains from this internship." Pressel's endorsement suggests not just an appreciation for Cabela's efforts but also for the internship program aimed at shaping future policy makers, as per the Indiana House Republicans.
The Indiana House of Representatives opens its doors annually, seeking college students, law school students, graduate students, and recent college graduates to engage with the legislative body through paid internships each session; this initiative offers a fertile training ground for aspiring government officials and policy influencers, providing them with a unique opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand and to learn valuable skills that can translate into a variety of career paths in public service.
