Hunters in Louisiana gearing up for turkey season, take note: regulations around the harvest of juvenile turkeys, commonly known as 'jakes,' have been specified by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). A reminder has been issued that adult hunters are prohibited from taking jakes, with an exception carved out for youth hunters 17 and under, who may harvest one such bird per season.
As per the LDWF announcement, a jake is determined by its physical characteristics, which include a beard shorter than six inches and a spur less than 0.5 inch. Conversely, an adult gobbler is distinguished by a beard over six inches, wing feathers with white barring to the tip, tail feathers of equal length, and spurs of at least 0.5 inch. The Louisiana turkey season begins on Saturday, April 5, with specific dates set for various hunting areas across the state.
As for licensing, all turkey hunters are required to carry a basic hunting license and a wild turkey license, with youth hunters necessitating an additional youth hunting license. Tags are also mandatory for turkey hunting, to be carried during the hunt and immediately used upon taking a turkey. Hunters are compelled to log their harvested turkey and validate the tag through the LDWF's tagging system within 72 hours. Tags can be acquired and validated online at the LDWF's website.
While many of the state's Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are open for turkey hunting this season, others, like Richard K. Yancey and Sherburne WMAs, will not be hosting the season.
