Early Wednesday morning in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood, a 56-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the neck followed by a car crash, WGN-TV reports. The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. in the 3800 block of West Harrison Street; the man was inside his car when two men, one with a gun, confronted him.

According to the CBS News account, after one of the men fired at the victim, the victim drove off and ended up colliding with a light pole police said he had a gunshot wound to his neck when found by the paramedics. The attackers fled and, at present, remain at large with no one in custody.

The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition. The area where the shooting occurred, a part of the city’s West Side, has seen its share of violence, a scourge that persists despite efforts to stem the tide.

The search for the suspects continues, and the investigation is ongoing by Area Four detectives.
