A fatal shooting occurred in a south Phoenix neighborhood on Monday afternoon, resulting in one death and one individual taken into police custody, authorities says. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident unfolded just before 1:30 p.m. near 24th Street and Baseline Road when Orlando Archuletta, a 38-year-old man, was shot while pushing a shopping cart.
Responding to reports of gunfire, Phoenix Police Department officers arrived at the scene to discover Archuletta suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect, now identified as Antonio Lopez Jr., age 48, fled the scene, but he didn't get far. A manhunt ensued, culminating with his apprehension as Lopez was discovered hiding behind a dumpster by law enforcement officials. "Evidence linking Lopez to the shooting was found in his possession," Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Details are still emerging following the fatal incident. As per reports by 12 News, the victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The investigation remains active, as police work to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the events that followed.
Lopez faces serious charges, including murder and drug offenses. He was quickly taken into custody by the Phoenix Police Department. The motive for the shooting is still unknown.
