An early morning armed robbery and shooting in Walton County has left one man dead and his wife critically injured, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The Monroe Police Department, responding to the incident at around 5:36 a.m. on the 200 block of Douglas Street, found Jennifer Hicks, 30, and her deceased husband, Jeremiah Hicks, 27, with gunshot wounds; Jennifer was subsequently airlifted to an Atlanta-area hospital for her critical injuries.
The ongoing investigation is working to uncover details of the shooting, with the Monroe Police asking for any witnesses or individuals with footage or pertinent information to reach out to Detective Jeremy Caldwell at 678-522-1236 or 770-266-5313, or by emailing [email protected], a plea echoed by neighboring residents who described the neighborhood, generally quiet, with kids riding bikes and dirt bikes up the street as one where nobody complains, nobody messing around like that. According to a statement obtained by Atlanta News First, Demitri Campbell, a Douglas Street resident, said, “There was a bunch of officers out here, trucks you don’t normally see with markings on them, I’m quite certain those were detectives. A lot of them was huddled off blocked the street off this way.”
The shooting remains an active case as the Monroe Police Department continues its efforts to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators. Neighbors of the Hicks couple expressed their shock and described them as nice people and hard workers who kept to themselves. "It’s pretty quiet," Campbell told Atlanta News First about the neighborhood's ambiance.
