A man was killed in an apartment fire in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The fire broke out around 2:18 a.m. at a 3-story, 20-unit apartment building located on the 7100 block of South Rhodes Avenue, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, but not before a 32-year-old man was pulled from the burning building. The victim was then rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Chicago police have reported no other injuries stemming from the incident and have said that the cause of the fire is now being investigated.
Recent updates reveal that the fatal fire was the result of 'unattended cooking', according to statements made by fire department spokesperson Larry Langford. In a tweet from the Chicago Fire Media, Langford noted, "Sadly, we report a fire fatality from 7108 Rhodes during the night. This is a 3 story 20 unit apartment building. OFI has determined the cause to be accidental/unattended cooking. No working smoke alarms were heard." This information was reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
As the investigation concludes and details emerge, the community mourns the unnamed man who lost his life in the blaze.
