Following a multi-state manhunt, authorities have apprehended an accused serial rapist who had fled Arizona after severing his electronic monitoring device. Alex Bangash, 23, was taken into custody in a rural Texas county, as reported by ABC15, after an operation involving Tempe police and the U.S. Marshals. Tempe police are currently investigating five alleged sexual assaults, including one involving a minor, with incidents dating back to 2018.
Despite his not guilty plea, Bangash faces serious charges, among them sexual assault, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. Prior incidents allege violent sexual encounters often initiated through social media engagements, where the likelihood of anonymity and false trust contribute to the predatory nature of these assaults. In one chilling instance, as reported by Ground News, Bangash is claimed to have told an alleged victim, "I love you, I’m going to kill you, I’m going to kill for you."
The severity and pattern of violence have been a deep concern for both victims and authorities alike. Commander Giltinan of the Tempe Police stressed the extent of Bangash’s alleged brutality in a statement obtained by ABC15: "Alex Bangash is a disturbed individual," he said, "He is accused of and arrested for multiple forcible sexual assaults and other crimes of violence." Bangash, who once commanded considerable online attention, has seen his actions offline catalyze fear and a palpable sense of danger within the community.
In a telling oversight, Bangash managed to remove his GPS ankle monitor and abscond from his home on March 10, despite the measures set forth by the court to mitigate risk, including a barred use of the internet and an injunction to not seek intimate relationships. The device was found discarded in a nearby alley, a silent testament to the failures in the system that Brooke Fulton of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence labeled as "absolutely unacceptable" in an interview with ABC15. This escape signified not just a flight from justice but also an indictment of the structures we trust to protect the most vulnerable from such escalating threats.
As the narrative unfolds, Tempe police encourage any other victims to come forward in pursuit of the justice process. "We stand by, ready to help. We were very invested in bringing justice to the survivors that we worked with through this entire process, and we will be just as invested in bringing you justice if you are a victim of Alex Bangash," Giltinan told ABC15.
