It was an ordinary October day turned extraordinary by the heroic instincts of local citizens and firefighters in Mankato. They were recently honored for their life-saving interventions during a medical emergency on October 26, 2024. The recognition was formalized in a social media post by Mankato Police and Fire, highlighting the swift actions of both community members and professional first responders.
The ceremony bestowed Citizen Life Saving Awards upon two individuals, Donald Lehne and Carrie Ketel Opheim. Applauded for what the Mankato Police and Fire described as “performing CPR, locating and using an AED, and assisting responders,” their efforts in conjunction helped stabilize the patient before professional help took over.
Furthermore, Citizen Appreciation Awards were given to Ramon Pinero, Derek Peterson, and Jake Krier, who contributed to the emergency response in critical, yet unspecified ways. Following suit, Firefighters Matt Jackson, Matt Goodrich, and Greg Hubbard earned Medical Intervention Awards, praised for their role in continuing the life-saving efforts and ensuring the patient's safe transport to the hospital. Expressing gratitude, the Mankato Police and Fire's post stated, "To each of you: thank you for answering the call when it mattered most."
