Manteca's Red-Light Traffic Safety Program started at the intersection of Union and W. Yosemite on Tuesday. Drivers running red lights will be recorded and warned, but not fined, during a 30-day grace period. After May 8, drivers will receive citations with a $490 fine, as stated by the Manteca Police Department.
North Main Street and East Louise Avenue will have advanced camera technology installed to monitor traffic violations. The city, in collaboration with Verra Mobility, will use automated systems to catch drivers running amber and red lights, reducing accidents and improving safety at these intersections, as reported by the Manteca Police Department.
According to the Manteca Police Department on their Facebook page, Chief Stephen Schluer discussed a new initiative to reduce red-light running, which causes accidents each year. The program includes a warning period to allow the public time to adjust their driving behavior before facing fines. Schluer stated, “We want the public to know how seriously we take this growing issue. This warning period will give our community plenty of time to change their driving behavior before risking fines.” The initiative is part of efforts to improve road safety. The Manteca Police encourage the public to, “Let's drive safely, Manteca! Your attention can save lives.”
