Yesterday in Maryville, Tennessee, a sense of camaraderie and purpose swept through the air as members of the Blount County Sheriff's Office, alongside other local law enforcers, gathered for a spirited six-mile journey to Heritage High School. This wasn't any ordinary run. It was a run that carried the flame of hope and support for the athletes of the Area 15 Special Olympics. The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), an event originally conceived to bond law enforcement with their communities, was leading the way to an event dedicated to inclusion and athletic prowess, as per the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff James Lee Berrong proudly announced the collaboration. Despite the early hour, several deputies and community representatives, carrying the Special Olympics flags, embarked on the run, affirmed by the safety of escorts from local law enforcement. The runners concluded their course at Heritage High School, joining the Special Olympics participants to begin the games with the emblematic torch officially.
It was back in 1981 when the idea for the LETR sprouted in the mind of Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon. The simple act of a communal run has since blossomed into the largest public awareness vehicle and fundraising endeavor for the Special Olympics under the endorsement of the International Chiefs of Police.
The Blount County Sheriff's Office and its fellow agencies have donned their sneakers and picked up the torch for many years, making this an enduring tradition within their ranks.
