Tragedy struck the family of Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern this week, as the congressman announced the unexpected death of his daughter, Molly. She had recently completed a semester abroad in Australia and was visiting a friend in Italy when she passed away. Despite battling a rare form of cancer, Molly's death came as a shock to both her family and the broader community whom she had impacted with her joy and compassion.
In a statement provided to Boston 25 News, the McGovern family honored Molly's resilience and spirit, "Even as she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity, refusing to let her illness slow her down." They added that Molly's presence was marked by a "beaming smile, full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant." The family also recognized her love for the Boston Bruins, though it was her unwavering love for people that truly defined her.
Molly's impact was acknowledged outside her immediate family, as well. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey expressed the collective heartbreak of the community and extended support to the McGoverns. "I’m heartbroken for the McGovern family over the loss of their beloved Molly," Healey said, according to a statement shared with WHDH News. "She was a kind, smart, and compassionate young woman who touched the lives of many."
The McGovern family described Molly as a source of pure joy, and a person who "made everyone feel special, because she genuinely believed everyone was special." According to the family's statement to Boston 25 News, her laugh and warmth left a lasting impression on all who met her. Despite the sadness that comes with such a loss, the McGoverns celebrate the light that she brought into the world, affirming, "We love you, Molly. We miss you already."
