Two longstanding Memphis youth organizations, Memphis Athletic Ministries and Streets Ministries, have announced a merger aimed at strengthening their services to the city's youth. The combined effort will operate under the Streets Ministries name, rallying around a shared mission of empowering young people in underserved neighborhoods through mentorship and enrichment programs. According to Local Memphis, this move is intended to consolidate resources, capitalize on organizational strengths, and streamline fundraising efforts.
With a collective history of 65 years of service, Streets Ministries and Memphis Athletic Ministries have been pillars in their community, serving more than 700 students every day. As reported by Action News 5, the two nonprofits have previously operated six facilities across Memphis. As they join forces, staff members will be retained from both organizations to continue their work with the children, and Memphis Athletic Ministries board members will transition to the board of Streets Ministries.
Details of the merger indicate that the organizations are currently reviewing staffing models and location strategies to enhance their communal impact. "Heaven knows, Memphis needs youth programs like those at MAM and Streets now more than ever," Keva Latham, chair of the Memphis Athletic Ministries board, told Commercial Appeal. The sentiment reflects the dedication to not just maintaining, but expanding the reach and effectiveness of the services provided.
Eric Ballentine, executive director of Streets, highlighted the potential impact of the merger in a statement: "The merging of these two incredible organizations will be a powerful catalyst for youth development and the advancement of the gospel in Memphis."
