A Cuban national has been dealt an 18-month federal prison sentence for his role in an alien smuggling operation. Rafael Rodriguez Hernandez, 35, received the sentence following his January plea of guilty, and he will be subjected to an additional three years of supervised release once he has completed his term, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.
Last September, Hernandez was piloting a vessel from the Bahamas to the United States, carrying 27 individuals who did not possess the necessary legal authorization to enter the country when they were halted by officers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under the relentless glare of justice, the apprehended group included five Ecuadorian nationals previously ousted from U.S. soil. The CBP officers, working aboard a CBP air and maritime operations vehicle, initially discovered Hernandez and his cargo.
Following the interception, the group was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Cutter Richard Etheridge, where their unlawful status was confirmed. While Hernandez and the five Ecuadorians were escorted to land to face prosecution, the remaining individuals were repatriated to the Bahamas, as detailed by a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The case, which has drawn attention to the ongoing challenges of immigration and border security, was investigated by HSI Miami with support from CBP and USCG, Acting Special Agent in Charge Jose R. Figueroa spearheaded the effort, underscoring the complexities of such operations that engage multiple agencies to safeguard national frontiers. Prosecutor Tanner Stiehl handled the case for the government.
