With the hurricane season on the horizon, Miami-Dade County officials are advising locals to prioritize their safety by using county-approved building materials. According to a recent statement by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava obtained by Miami-Dade County's news release, the aim is to ensure that homes and properties are resilient enough to withstand the possible harsh weather conditions. "As we approach another hurricane season, protecting our homes and families must be a top priority,” Cava stated, emphasizing the role of the county's Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources.
For a region situated in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, adhering to the strict Florida Building Code is not just a formality but a necessity. Jaime D. Gascon, director of the Board and Code Administration Division, highlighted the array of products on the market. However, as Miami-Dade County's news release quoted him, “However, residents should look for the ‘Miami-Dade County Product Approved’ seal or mark on those products, indicating they met the high standards.” This seal is the assurance the materials are tested and capable of mitigating the damages during severe weather.
Homeowners preparing for the upcoming season are urged to ensure that any construction or repairs are performed using approved materials. Whether the materials are procured personally or through contractors, awareness of these requirements is crucial. The county's Product Control Section has established protocols to evaluate products; from doors to roofing and truss connectors, everything must pass muster to be deemed fit for use in Miami-Dade County.
