A man was fatally shot by a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy yesterday evening in Southwest Miami-Dade following a domestic dispute. The incident was first reported by NBC Miami, stating that the confrontation occurred near Southwest 130th Avenue and 132nd Terrace after the man's wife called 911 reporting a fight with her husband.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz told NBC Miami that the call was an open line and the dispatcher could hear a physical altercation in the background. "She called 911 and unfortunately was caught up in this physical altercation, so she couldn’t talk on the 911. But our call-taker was able to hear what was going on and based on what was heard, the deputies were dispatched," Cordero-Stutz said. The sheriff confirmed that the deputies were aware of weapons being involved prior to arriving at the scene.
The confrontation escalated when a responding deputy made contact with the husband, leading to an exchange in which the man drew a gun. "Detectives said, the man drew his weapon, and the deputy was forced to open fire, striking the subject," according to a 7News Miami report.
The man was transported to a hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue but died from his injuries. In aftermath of shooting, Local 10 reported that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. The same source highlighted Sheriff Cordero-Stutz's comments on the broader issue of domestic violence: "I would really like to say that if you are an individual who is in crisis with a domestic violence situation, call 911, please. Let us come to help you. That is our job, and we will do it gladly."
Residents of the Tuscany 3 Village community reported hearing multiple gunshots, with one individual, Ashley Arenares, stating to NBC Miami, "I believe it was four, then a pause, and then like another four." The identity of the man and the details of the initial dispute have not been released, as the investigation is ongoing. According to officials, neither the wife nor the deputy who fired their weapon was injured during the incident.
