The Miami Dolphins' front office is testing the trade waters for their All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, a move confirmed by general manager Chris Grier. Discussions between Ramsey's agents and the team have prompted both parties to consider a split, though Grier emphasizes, "These decisions aren't done quickly," as reported by NBC Miami. Ramsey hasn't demanded a trade or more cash, a sentiment echoed by Grier in his statements to WPBF.
With talks underway with several teams, the Dolphins are still tight-lipped about their negotiations. The cornerback, who joined Miami from the Los Angeles Rams in a 2023 deal and secured a lucrative contract extension the following season, has guaranteed earnings of $24.2 million for the current season. While articulating the difficulty of replacing a talent like Ramsey, Grier said, "We feel good about where it is. It’s never easy to replace a player like Jalen, He’s a good player. He’ll probably be a Hall of Famer. But for the Miami Dolphins going forward, we feel like this is the best chance to help us win not only just this year but in the future as well," according to NBC Miami.
The potential departure of Ramsey adds to the roster revamp, as Miami released starting cornerback Kendall Fuller and faces the retirement of key players like left tackle Terron Armstead. With the addition of Artie Burns through free agency and the availability of young talents like Storm Duck and Cam Smith, the team, according to Grier, must now look for Smith to step up after an injury-ridden tenure. He told WPBF, “Cam Smith needs to come through at the end of the day. He’s got to stay healthy and be on the field. He has shown some flashes, but this is a very big year.”
Despite the trade talks, overcoming the uncertainty of Ramsey’s future hangs in the balance. If no deal materializes, Grier has made it clear the team will "deal with it," as he remains uncertain whether a trade will happen before this month’s draft. Ramsey's athleticism and versatility have been lauded by Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who has described him as the “ultimate chess piece,” according to remarks shared by WPBF. Amid the speculation, Miami's strategy seems to aim at building for the future, rather than dwelling on immediate setbacks.
