A Mississippi man has entered a guilty plea for possession of machine guns, according to a recent announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson. The man, James Harris, aged 33, appeared before United States District Judge Sarah S. Vance yesterday, where he admitted to the charges under the strict federal statutes governing machine guns.
Harris, caught in the grasp of the law through the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), fell into the net of an investigation targeting firearm trafficking in New Orleans, a city whose history with gun violence is as lengthy as it is tragic, between September 2023 and November 2023 agents established communication with Harris, culminating in his sale of illicit arms to undercover agents on November 15, 2023, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
The date now sits etched in his timeline: August 13, 2025, the day of Harris's sentencing, where he faces a formidable penalty of up to ten years imprisonment, fines reaching a quarter of a million dollars, three years of supervised release following imprisonment, and the sting of a $100 mandatory special assessment fee. These repercussions lay bare the severity with which the federal judicial system addresses such transgressions.
This case is not merely a one-off but part of the larger Operation Take Back America, reflecting a sprawling, coordinated offensive aligning the Department of Justice's resources against the dual specters of illegal migration and cartel violence, efforts come together under this initiative aiming to repel, to eliminate, to protect comprises the Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood, the amalgamated forces of law enforcement striving to foster security within the nation's borders. For more information regarding the initiative and details of Harris's case, Assistant United States Attorney Lynn E.
