The commute through Town and Country and Chesterfield stands to get a little more complicated over the next several months, as MoDOT kicks off construction on the interchange connecting Interstate 64 and Route 141. The project has been necessitated by increased traffic congestion and aims to make significant improvements to ease the flow of vehicles through this key junction.
Starting April 14, MoDOT has scheduled several closures, with shifts expected based on weather conditions. According to a statement obtained by MoDOT, the ramp from the westbound outer road to southbound Route 141 will be inaccessible from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Monday. While driving under the inclement weather, the ramp from eastbound to southbound Route 141 will be similarly closed the following night during these hours.
Travel disruptions continue with northbound and southbound Route 141 slated to have up to two lanes closed on Wednesday starting at 9 p.m. Subsequent changes will then persist around the clock for travelers. Drivers can anticipate altered lane paths on southbound Route 141, narrowed lanes on ramps from I-64, and a halved number of turn lanes from northbound Route 141 to the eastbound interstate. Closing one of the two turn lanes from northbound Route 141 to eastbound I-64, the lanes on both the ramp from eastbound I-64 and the ramp from the westbound outer road to southbound Route 141 will be narrowed.
The construction project promises to alleviate current backups by widening the ramp from the westbound outer road to add an extra turn lane for southbound Route 141. Additional enhancements include widening the eastbound I-64 ramp for a dedicated right turn lane onto Route 141 and an expanded segment of Route 141 from that ramp to the exit at the Woods Mill roundabout. With the aim of improving safety and reducing congestion, the construction, once completed, will also involve resurfacing of Route 141 between St. Lukes Hospital Drive and I-64, as reported by MoDOT. During daytime off-peak hours, drivers should anticipate lane closures north of I-64, and likewise during the nighttime, ramp and lane closures will affect the areas south of the Interstate.
The wider ramp from eastbound I-64 will provide a dedicated right turn lane onto Route 141, with Route 141 itself being widened between that ramp and the exit to Woods Mill roundabout to allow for a dedicated lane for vehicles to gain speed and merge onto southbound Route 141 more efficiently.
