In a recent incident in Monroe County, a house fire resulted in the tragic death of a cat, while firefighters were able to rescue four dogs from the burning structure. The Monroe Fire Protection District (MFD) responded to the emergency on Friday morning, after being alerted to smoke in the 6900 block of South McCormick Lane. A deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, already in the vicinity, first reported visible flames coming from what appeared to be a boarded-up residence, as stated by FOX59.
Upon arriving, firefighters briskly moved to act, initiating a search inside the home, which they later discovered to be undergoing renovations. "MFD crews then worked to successfully rescue four dogs from the residence," according to a FOX59 report. However, amidst the blaze, they also recovered a deceased cat.
The fire was brought under control "within minutes" of the firefighters' arrival, a swift response that limited further damage. No humans were reportedly harmed as the owner was not present at the time. The information gathered by the MFD suggests that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Meanwhile, the four dogs that were rescued from the fire were safely taken to an area animal shelter to receive necessary care overnight, as reported by WTHR.
Among the units that responded to the call were MFD Ambulance 22, Engines 22, 21, 23, 29, and 39, Battalion 22, Chief 23, and the MFD Fire Marshal, as detailed in a press release sourced by The Bloomingtonian. The crew from Ambulance 22 were particularly noted for their initial rapid response, which was instrumental in conducting the primary search and managing to immediately put on firefighting gear as they arrived on scene.
