A tragic incident occurred yesterday when a Mooresville man perished in a private pond while trying to remove debris. The Mooresville Fire Department and the Brown Township Fire Department were dispatched to the scene in the 11700 block of North Lambert Court at approximately 8:30 a.m., as per FOX59.
According to witnesses at the scene, the homeowner was engaged in the seemingly mundane task of clearing pond debris when a whirlpool was unexpectedly formed. The individual, a male, was subsequently sucked underneath a culvert pipe, unable to free himself from the fierce suction created by the water. Firefighters and rescue crews bravely tried to securely rescue the man, but the high waters and subsequent safety concerns halted their efforts, an effort that took nearly an hour before being pronounced unsuccessful, as reported by WISH-TV.
The Mooresville Fire Department Chief Matt Dalton, alongside the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), confirmed that the man, believed to range in age from his 50s to 60s, was up to his chest in water when the suction from the water pulled him under. The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. "All rescue efforts were stopped due to safety," Dalton said, as WTHR reported.
The Indiana DNR, along with the Morgan County Sheriff's Department, now leads the ongoing investigation to thoroughly understand the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event. Mooresville, located about 20 miles southwest of Indianapolis, is grappling with the loss of one of their community members whose attempt to tend to his property led to the unfathomable ultimate cost.
