A Nashville man, already on probation for attempted murder, is facing new charges after being arrested with a firearm, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee. The man identified as Latreavias Burns, age 28, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire emphasized the firm stance against violent felons carrying guns, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, "We will not permit those who have committed violent crimes to carry firearms, especially when they are on release in our community." McGuire's office reported the recent incident involving Burns during an ongoing surveillance operation in the area around South 6th Street and Summer Place in Nashville last Thursday. Running from the scene, Burns, who had active state warrants, was apprehended and found to be illegally armed.

Detectives, employing the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) cameras, identified Burns amongst a gathering of individuals, leading to a foot chase once officers arrived on the scene. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Burns was found in possession of a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol, loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition, which was concealed in his pant leg. A digital scale with marijuana residue was also discovered during his arrest.

With a history of convictions including Attempted Second Degree Murder and Assault Resulting in Death, Burns had reportedly absconded from his community corrections program before this event, according to the Tennessee Department of Corrections. Possibly facing up to 15 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 if convicted, Burns’ case is currently under investigation by both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
