Nashville's Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) is showing up for the youth of Davidson County this summer, as they announce a partnership with over 60 community organizations to provide free breakfast and lunch. This initiative primarily targets children who depend on school programs for meals during the school year. According to an article from the Official Metropolitan Action Commission website, qualifying sites include day camps, religious programs, community centers, and apartment complexes serving as safe spaces for kids during the break.

The program, able to reach about 110 locations throughout the community, seeks establishments based near schools to participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch program. In a recent statement, Marvin Cox, who directs the Community Outreach Division at MAC, highlighted the pressing need, stating, “With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about how children who receive free or reduced-priced meals at school will eat healthy while school is out.” MAC intends to ensure continuity in support for those children facing food insecurity when the school doors close for summer.

Applications are still open for sites wishing to distribute these meals. Youth leaders and program organizers interested in becoming part of the effort have until May 2 to submit their applications. The MAC provides training in May for both new and continuing meal sites, along with ongoing monitoring to ensure program success. Details for applying can be found on the agency's website, where there's a page titled "Get Free Summer Meals for Youth," or at the MAC's main office, located at 1281 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville.
