In a press release from the New Orleans Police Department, Jamal Washington has been arrested in connection with two separate homicides that took place on the same day last year. The incidents occurred on July 31, 2024, with one homicide on the South I-10 Service Road and another on Texas Drive.
The NOPD’s statement detailed the connection between the two crimes and identified the victims as 42-year-old Christopher Cooke and 38-year-old Reginald Ware, both of whom died from gunshot-related injuries. After identifying Washington as a person of interest in the days following the homicides, NOPD detectives apprehended and interviewed the suspect. Following the interview, the NOPD acquired arrest warrants for Washington on two counts of second-degree murder, one for each incident.
According to the NOPD report, the investigations led them to believe that the same perpetrator was responsible for both crimes. "Through further investigation, detectives developed Washington as a person of interest," states the NOPD.
After being located and interviewed earlier today, Washington was placed into custody and is currently being held at the Orleans Parish Justice Center. The NOPD has not released further details about the motive, the method of arrest, or any connections between Washington and the victims. However, the Orleans Parish Coroner's office had previously identified the cause of death, for both Cooke and Ware, as gunshot-related injuries.
