The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has released its newest batch of crime data, shedding light on crime trends for the week of April 6-12, 2025. According to the NOPD Analytics Unit's preliminary report, the city has seen a noticeable decrease in gun-related arrests and seizures compared to last year's figures.
In a statement made by the NOPD, the number of arrests for illegal possession of a firearm has dropped to 100, marking a 51-percent decrease from the 206 arrests made during the same period in 2024. This downswing in gun arrests comes amidst a broader conversation on law enforcement practices and gun control efforts across the nation.
Moreover, firearm seizures during criminal investigations have also diminished. NOPD has confiscated 538 firearms thus far in 2025, which represents a 34-percent decrease when contrasted with the 820 seizures executed around the same time frame in the previous year, as per the department's report.
While these preliminary statistics suggest some progress in the control of illegal firearms in New Orleans, the figures are not set in stone.
