In a case that brings a grim edge to holiday imagery, 58-year-old John Calvin Moore of North Carolina has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearms possession, as revealed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Oklahoma. Moore was caught with a substantial haul of illegal drugs, cleverly disguised as Christmas presents, during a traffic stop by the Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD) in December 2023. According to the official report, the concealed cargo comprised more than 42 pounds of methamphetamine and over 38 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding $350,000.
The circumstances leading to Moore's arrest emerge from a mundane enough beginning—he was initially pulled over for speeding on I-40 while driving eastbound, but a sense of suspicion was sparked when officers noticed several gift-wrapped packages in the trunk and although he claimed he was journeying from California to North Carolina, police learned the vehicle was due back in Ontario, California the day after the stop. A K-9 unit brought in detected the presence of drugs and a thorough search revealed the narcotics hidden within the presents. In addition to the drugs, Moore's past included a felony conviction in New Jersey for possessing weapons for an unlawful purpose, setting the stage for the recent charges against him.
Following his indictment on August 30, 2024, and a subsequent guilty plea on September 26, Moore admitted to both the possession of meth with intent to distribute and the illegal possession of a firearm, as stated in the U.S. Attorney's announcement. His admission came as part of a plea deal that culminated in the March 28, sentencing by U.S. District Judge Charles Goodwin. During the sentencing, Judge Goodwin underscored "the seriousness of the crime" and Moore's role as a "courier to transport controlled substances across the country."
This case represents a significant collaboration between several law enforcement agencies including the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Criminal Interdiction Team of Central Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma City Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew E.
