An Oakland man, Pedro Juarez, 33, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison following his conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person previously convicted of a felony. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, this decision was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Robbins and ATF Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Cicolani.

The sentence was delivered by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer, who also imposed a three-year term of supervised release once Juarez has served his prison time, along with an order to forfeit the recovered firearm and ammunition. As stated in a jury trial that concluded on September 25, 2024, Juarez's crime dates back to an incident on August 16, 2023. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Juarez had compelled a woman to travel with him from San Jose to San Francisco before releasing her, leading to her 9-1-1 call and the subsequent police response.

Upon locating Juarez in San Francisco, authorities reported that he fled and, during the pursuit, drew a loaded handgun and attempted to point it at officers. However, his arm struck a railing, causing the weapon to fall. Juarez is currently in custody and will immediately start serving his prison term for these actions.

The case against Juarez was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ivana Djak and Noah Stern, with support from Tina Rosenbaum and Madeline Wachs. The successful prosecution stemmed from an investigation carried out by the ATF.
