On the morning of March 31, a tragic collision on Highway 97 in Klamath County claimed the life of one and left another unharmed, as Oregon State Police and other emergency responders grappled with the aftermath and traffic disruptions. According to a statement obtained by the Oregon State Police, the crash occurred when a Buick LeSabre driven by Leif Taylor Celusta, 34, of Crescent, lost control, veering over into oncoming traffic and directly into the path of a Kenworth commercial vehicle.
Celusta was tragically declared dead at the scene after a crash. Robert Emil Mewes, 58, the driver of the Kenworth truck, was unharmed, as reported by the Oregon State Police. The crash caused traffic to stop for about two hours as officials worked to clear the scene and investigate. Speed and bad road conditions are suspected to have contributed to the accident.
The Crescent Fire Department helped at the scene, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) worked to clear the road and restore traffic, as per the Oregon State Police. Authorities highlighted how quickly a normal day can turn into a disaster, reminding us of the unpredictable risks we face on every trip.
