Bunzl Distribution USA Inc., a UK-based company, has declared its intention to close its operations at the Memphis facility, which will affect the employment of 106 workers. According to Action News 5, the facilities operating under its umbrella and slated for closure at the 4025 Viscount Avenue location include International Sourcing Co. Inc. operating as Cordova Safety Products, SAS Safety Corp., M. L. Kishigo Manufacturing Co. LLC, and U.S. Glove Co. Inc. doing business as Majestic Glove.
The closure is scheduled for June 30, as detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice, filed with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Notably, all employees have been offered an opportunity to transfer to another Bunzl facility, this one situated at 685 Highway 72 in Piperton, Tennessee, reports Local Memphis. This offers a glimmer of hope for those seeking to maintain their employment within the company.
Memphis Business Journal described Bunzl as a "huge international corporation," emphasizing the impact that the shutdown of such a significant presence in the Memphis area may have on the local economy. The decision to close the facility reflects the changing logistics and distribution strategies that corporations like Bunzl are implementing across the globe.
The move by Bunzl comes amidst a landscape where distribution and supply chain management are increasingly vital to companies seeking efficiency and cost-effectiveness. As this business sector evolves, the Memphis area is left to assess how the departure of Bunzl Distribution USA will shape its economic future. The affected employees, along with the business community at large, now looks towards adapting to these shifts in the coming months.
