As dawn broke over Stone Mountain Park, more than 5,000 individuals from various backgrounds ascended the iconic natural landmark for the 79th annual Easter Sunrise Service, a tradition dating back to 1944. According to WSB-TV, the early service attracted people looking for fellowship and the unique experience of greeting the day atop the mountain.
The park, witnessing one of its largest turnouts in recent history, welcomed attendees with open gates at around 3 a.m., as reported by FOX5Atlanta. Making the journey in the pre-dawn hush, people hauled blankets, chairs, and warm beverages up the mountain, anticipating the service conducted by Bryant Write and Crawford Loritts, leaders of respective ministries dedicated to spreading faith beyond their congregations.
The non-denominational ceremony, which commenced at around 7 a.m., included an hour of music, prayers, and communal singing. Filling the air with spiritual resonance, the two services—one perched atop the mountain and another stationed at its base—signified a sacred communion under the gaze of the morning light. FOX5Atlanta details that attendees had the option to either hike the walk-up trail or take the Skyride to reach the summit, with Skyride fees set at $20 for a round trip and $15 for one way.
Following the service, Stone Mountain Park offered a full day of family-friendly attractions and activities. The park, which opened its attractions from 11:30 a.m., allowed guests to explore the scenery and take part in various recreational activities until 5:00 p.m. Sending blankets of warmth, the cloudy skies and mid-80s temperatures accentuated the day's festivities outlined by FOX5Atlanta, underscoring an ideal setting for Easter egg hunts and other celebratory occasions.
"This is an amazing experience. This is my first time here. I’ve been trying to make it here the past two years, but I couldn’t make it up here. But to be here in person, and all these people from different faiths, it’s an amazing experience," Wayne Dodrill shared his sentiments in a statement obtained by WSB-TV. His presence, along with thousands of others, captured the inclusive and uplifting spirit that defines the annual event.
