A high school student in Perry Township experienced a life-threatening overdose on school grounds yesterday, after unwittingly using a THC vape pen laced with fentanyl. School administrators quickly responded with a life-saving intervention. In an effort to keep parents informed, a letter detailing the incident was disseminated, describing how the student was discovered to have used the substance on campus and the subsequent actions taken by the school staff.
According to a report by FOX59/CBS4, the Perry Township Schools administration confirmed that the THC vape used by the high school student did indeed contain fentanyl, unbeknownst to the student. The district's school police have since arrested two students, who are currently held at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center for being responsible to bring to bring the vape into the school.
The reaction from the school's officials was a blend of gratitude and caution. In a statement obtained by WISHTV, Perry Township Schools Superintendent Patrick Spray thanked the school staff, the district's police force, and the school nurses for their level of preparedness, which "undoubtedly saved this student's life." He also urged parents to hold conversations with their children about the risks of ingesting unknown substances that can prove fatal.
Addressing the broader implications of the overdose incident, Overdose Lifeline CEO and founder Justin Phillips highlighted the critical role of access to naloxone, also known as Narcan. She described to WISHTV the importance of Narcan in saving lives during the ongoing opioid epidemic and noted, "Fentanyl in everything is a real danger, so that student got to live because that school is smart and proactive."
The stark reality of this overdose adds to a growing concern in Indianapolis, which reported a spike in suspected overdoses last week. According to IndyStar, the city's east side has been grappling with this surge, highlighting the pervasive and insidious nature of the opioid crisis reaching even into educational environments where one expects safety and security.
