Mayor Daniel Lurie and District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton joined forces with community and city leaders to inaugurate the Potrero Gateway Project, a major streetscape renovation in Potrero Hill. Celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the project has transformed a previously unsafe and unwelcoming space into a new passage for pedestrians and cyclists by widening sidewalks, adding protected bike lanes, and planting native flora. "I'm excited to celebrate the opening of the Potrero Gateway, a project that's making Potrero Hill safer and more inviting," said Mayor Lurie, per the City and County of San Francisco.
Public Works, which led the venture, collaborated closely with the local community to revitalize the underpass on 17th Street between San Bruno Avenue and Vermont Street, as well as a block of Vermont Street, as reported by San Francisco Public Works on their Facebook page. Both sections had been previously identified as needing critical improvements by SFMTA's Vision Zero team, and safety features such as concrete dividers and improved lighting have now been incorporated.
According to Carla Short, Director of San Francisco Public Works, "These key improvements aim to change how the community interacts with and perceives the area." Supervisor Walton, who voiced support for the project, told the City and County of San Francisco, "The Potrero Gateway project is proof of what’s possible when the community leads and the city listens." The renovations have been credited to the perseverance of the local community, who sought a more inclusive and appealing space in their neighborhood.
