She stands out in the predominantly Republican council in a role designed to bring expertise from a state that has seen its fair share of devastation caused by natural disasters. According to Florida Politics, Castor's selection is indicative of her extensive experience with hurricane preparedness, response, and recovery.
President Trump has previously criticized FEMA's efficacy, prompting the creation of this council to evaluate and recommend improvements to the agency. In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the importance of state emergency managers and implied that the current system requires an overhaul." he stated.
Guthrie expressed his readiness to tackle the challenges ahead, saying, "Humbled and honored to be selected to serve on the FEMA Review Council. Ready to get to work alongside incredible leaders to strengthen emergency management for communities across the country," according to a statement obtained by NBC Miami. Castor, too, acknowledged the pressing needs of her community, "But for some neighborhoods — Davis Islands, Palmetto Beach, Westshore, Forest Hills, Overlook, Palma Ceia Pines — the devastation lingers," she told Florida Politics. She further promised that their plight would not be forgotten and that her inclusion on the council served a higher purpose for those affected.
The formation of this council comes as some states, critical to Trump's election, are appealing for continued FEMA support in the wake of recent disasters.
