Residents in Salt Lake City are looking at a major road improvement project starting this month, focused on the stretch between Redwood Road and 800 West on 600/700 North. An open house event has been scheduled for the community to engage with the contractors, learn more about the expected timeline, and understand the impacts of the construction, according to Salt Lake City.

Planned improvements include pavement replacement to extend the road's life, new curb-protected bike lanes, and upgrading sidewalks, while maintaining the existing driving lanes to prevent congestion. Megan Leether, a Salt Lake City Project Engineer, shed light on what the project aims to achieve: "We are excited to talk to the community about the investments being made with this project and the benefits it will bring to the neighborhood," she said, as per Salt Lake City. The new additions are set to create a holistic upgrade to the neighborhood's infrastructure.

The public meeting with contractors is planned for April 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Backman Elementary School, where residents can get an in-depth look at construction schedules, phasing, and how daily routines might be affected. The event will also cater to the local Spanish-speaking community with bilingual team members available to answer questions.

For the younger residents, Salt Lake City, along with Bike Utah, is hosting a bike rodeo during the open house. The event will teach kids essential bike safety skills through a special course; a raffle will also be featured, where participants can win a new adult bike, or one of several children’s bikes, complete with helmets and bike lights. The Other Side Donuts will be providing refreshments, sweetening the deal for those who attend.

In parallel to the roadwork, a collaboration between the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Salt Lake City is set to see the Jordan River Bridge at 650 North rebuilt. This update is crucial for the bridge’s durability and resilience to natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. Detours will be part of the eight-month bridge reconstruction process, so residents will need to plan accordingly.
