As the Salt Lake City Marathon gears up for its much-anticipated event on Saturday, April 26, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has issued an advisory warning locals about the extensive road closures encompassing over 200 intersections across the city. These disruptions, kicking off as early as midnight in certain downtown zones, are aimed at ensuring safety for all involved, from runners to volunteers and the spectators cheering them on. According to SLCPD, closures will persist until 5 p.m., although the bulk will be active from around 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Various neighborhoods, including downtown, Federal Heights, the University of Utah campus, Sugar House, and Holladay, will be impacted during the marathon, with significant delays anticipated for motorists. The SLCPD advises residents, business owners, and visitors alike to plan ahead and to not only allow extra travel time but to also seek out alternate routes to avoid getting caught in the closures.
Streets along the marathon route will strictly enforce parking restrictions, with towing to be actively carried out in no-parking zones. "SLCPD officers will allow traffic to cross the route at major intersections, as crowds allow. Emergency vehicles will still be given access as needed," as stated by the SLCPD. Those seeking to navigate around the city on race day should heed the directions of officers on site. Comprehensive information on road closures and schedules can be found on the event’s official website.
In partnership with various city departments, emergency services, and race organizers, the SLCPD has worked to meticulously arrange a safety plan to protect both participants and spectators, situating officers strategically to direct traffic and respond to emergencies swiftly. Runners and those coming out to support are reminded "to stay aware of their surroundings, follow all posted signs and instructions from public safety personnel, and report anything suspicious to an officer or race official," as per SLCPD. These efforts underline the department's commitment to hosting a successful event while minimizing inconveniences to the community.
