Early Tuesday morning, Salt Lake City experienced its first and second homicides of the year with a double homicide in the downtown area. As reported by Fox13, police were called to the vicinity of 171 West and 500 South around 12:33 a.m. upon receiving reports of a shooting. At the scene, officers discovered two individuals with fatal gunshot wounds.
Currently, a man has been detained in connection with the dual slayings. Details are sparse as the Salt Lake City Police Department has not released any names but has identified the individual as a person of interest, according to KUTV. It remains unclear whether this individual is believed to be the sole perpetrator or if authorities are considering the presence of additional suspects.
The shootings took place at a downtown Salt Lake hotel, and while the investigation is still in its nascent stages, police have begun the meticulous work of gathering details and interviewing witnesses. ABC4 News shared a statement from SLCPD that emphasized, "Although detectives are just beginning their preliminary investigation, which includes gathering details, speaking with witnesses, and reviewing any digital evidence, officers do not believe there is a threat to our community."
