In a move towards a greener and more connected San Diego, the City Council has given the green light to the Mobility Master Plan, San Diego's first framework aimed at reshaping the city's transport landscape. After two years of community engagement and cross-departmental collaboration, the plan emerged with unanimous approval, poised to revamp how San Diegans transit on their daily routines, be it on foot, in wheelchairs, or on two wheels, according to an announcement reported by the City of San Diego.
Under this aspirational roadmap, safety and sustainability take center stage, aligning with the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Local leaders and community members poured their insights into the planning process, ensuring the plan reflects a wide spectrum of needs across the city. Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, chair of the Council’s Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, emphasized, per the City of San Diego, "This Mobility Master Plan is a major step toward making our streets safer while protecting our environment." Whitburn recognized the strategy’s potential to uplift the climate-friendly transportation array and foster a safer environment for traffic participants.
City Planning Director Heidi Vonblum outlined the inclusive ambition of the Plan, stating, "The Mobility Master Plan represents an important step toward a more coordinated approach to achieving a transportation system that is well-connected, sustainable and enjoyable for all San Diegans." The Plan's focus on egalitarian principles ensures that safe and sustainable transportation options are attainable regardless of one's income or residential area, as mentioned by the City of San Diego.
Officials detailed the plan’s extensive public vetting process and highlighted various platforms for citizen input. Residents encountered information booths at local events, visited virtual open house events, and contributed online to tailor the Plan to San Diego’s unique transit pulse. The outcome features over 300 mobility projects and 15 programs designed to ease and enhance movement throughout the city.
