
In a recent update concerning the fatal hit-and-run case in Clairemont Mesa East, San Diego County Crime Stoppers, coupled with the San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division, have put out a call for any information regarding two involved vehicles. The incident, which took place on March 29, resulted in the death of a 36-year-old e-bike rider as he traveled home from work at approximately 1:28 a.m. along the 6900 block of Balboa Avenue, reported Crime Stoppers.
According to the Crime Stoppers media release, the cyclist was hit by what is believed to be a white vehicle, potentially a Dodge Charger model years 2015-2023, featuring California Legacy license plates. The second vehicle, thought to be a gray Mercedes E-Class, struck the victim immediately thereafter. The white vehicle is expected to exhibit significant front-end damage, including damage to the bumper, hood, and passenger side of the windshield. The Mercedes will likely have missing or damaged parts on its lower front bumper.
In a separate account of the incident, Officer D. O'Brien detailed the events that ended tragically through the SDPD Watch Commander's log. The electric bike rider was making his way in the westbound bike lane on Balboa Avenue when he swerved into the path of a moving vehicle and was subsequently struck. The collision was fatal, with the e-bike rider pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital, as Hoodline reports.
The driver involved in the hit-and-run did not stay at the scene, sparking a search by local authorities. As details about the suspect or the vehicle remain limited, the San Diego Police’s Traffic Division urges anyone with information to step forward to help apprehend those responsible for the collision. Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for any information that could lead to an arrest in this case.
