San Francisco State University Students Launch Muni-Focused Traffic Reports on Campus RadioSource: Evan0512, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

San Francisco State University students are offering a helping hand to their fellow commuters navigating the often hectic Muni system. These broadcasting students from the university's Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts department (BECA) are delivering the KSFS Transit-Traffic Report, a traffic broadcast focused on aiding travel for the SF State community, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Airing every weekday at 4:45 p.m. on KSFS, SF State's internet-based campus radio station, these 20-to-30-second reports are a lifeline for many, as they cover Muni, including the array of bus routes and Metro line that serves the school. Professor Elaine Leung, a longtime professional traffic reporter, is behind this initiative. "I came up with idea for 'KSFS Transit-Traffic Report' because we're a commuter school, and there's a need for it," Leung told the SFMTA.

The reports have become even more indispensable after SF State discontinued its shuttle service to the Daly City BART station last year. The transportation void has been filled partly by Muni, with students relying on bus routes 28, 28R, 57, and 58 to connect to BART. Adding to the mix is the Gator Pass transit program, which grants SF State students unlimited rides during the semester as part of their student fees.

KSFS Production Manager and SF State student Casey Crews commented on the educative aspect of the broadcasts, "It's structured just like [a traffic report] would be in commercial radio." Real-time traffic conditions and Muni arrival times are researched minutes before the airtime, ensuring current information is provided to listeners. Crews added, as per SFMTA, "I'm a commuter student and know how valuable traffic reports are."
