San Jose's year of violence added yet another chapter as the city encountered its 7th homicide of 2025. The San José Police Department (SJPD) responded to a report last Thursday where a male victim was found non-responsive in a shopping area along the 1700 block of Berryessa Road. Despite life-saving attempts by the medical crew, the victim's life was claimed by a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital, as SJPD's official update reported.
No arrest was made at the scene. Having fled the area before officers arrived, the suspected shooter spun the investigation into immediate action. A combination of searches and early leads allowed SJPD detectives to identify San José resident Jairo Ortiz, age 39, as the primary suspect in the case, as per the San José Police Department. The suspect was apprehended last Friday and now faces murder charges, taking him off the streets and hopefully providing some closure to the traumatized community.
As the detectives work to unravel the motivations behind the shooting, the victim’s identity is held, awaiting the completion of official identification and the notification of next of kin, as quoted by the San José Police Department.
