The San Pablo Police Department has issued a community warning about a worrying crime wave that’s been preying on the elderly. There have been multiple reports of elderly pedestrians being targeted by thieves using a particularly insidious tactic, as per the San Pablo Police Department.
This trend involves suspects driving up to senior citizens and engaging them by offering prayers and fake jewelry as a distraction to remove their valuables without confrontation. The ruse often ends with the victim's own jewelry disappearing unnoticed. These incidents have surfaced through various reports, though it’s uncertain whether it’s the work of a single group or multiple perpetrators. The police note that the tactics have involved a range of different vehicles and thus may suggest a wider network of culprits.
In response to these incidents, the San Pablo Police Department advises residents to remain vigilant when approached by strangers in vehicles offering jewelry or religious conversation; it is suggested to maintain distance from the vehicle and avoid personal contact with such individuals. Moreover, maintaining discretion in wearing jewelry and carrying large amounts of cash is also recommended to reduce the risk of becoming a target for these crimes.
Should anyone encounter a situation that seems to be an attempt at this type of theft, the San Pablo Police Department urges the public to call 9-1-1 immediately. Victims who have already suffered thefts should report the crime at 510-724-1111. The department is actively investigating these reports and calls on anyone with information to assist by contacting the San Pablo Police Investigations at 510-215-3150.
