A 77-year-old woman, identified as Carolyn Joyce Woods, has succumbed to injuries sustained during a house fire in Sayler Park last month. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office confirmed her death at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Monday, The Enquirer reports. The tragic incident unfolded on March 30 on Home City Avenue when Cincinnati firefighters were called to the scene at 5:13 p.m. as flames engulfed the residence.
First responders found Woods trapped inside the burning home along with several animals. "Arriving crews reported that there was a victim and several animals trapped inside," District 1 Fire Chief Eric Freel said in a press release mentioned by The Enquirer. Crews worked to free Woods and transported her to the UC Medical Center for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, despite the efforts made by the rescue teams, two of the cats did not survive the incident.
The fire, which was reported to include multiple animals in distress, resulted in the loss of two cats inside the home, as noted by WLWT. Firefighters were able to save five other cats and a dog, along with Woods herself, who was critically injured at that time. Another individual, who has not been identified, escaped the home unaided and received help from the Red Cross.
Details regarding the cause of the fire have not yet been provided. The community mourns the loss of Woods, whose presence had been a part of Sayler Park for many years. "Another person also was said to have removed themselves from the scene of the fire," according to WLWT, which hints at the chaotic nature of the event that resulted in this tragedy. The investigation into the fire is ongoing as officials seek to understand the circumstances that led up to this fatal event.
