Early this week, a routine burglarly call escalated into a significant drug and weapon bust in Shelbyville, with local police successfully apprehending a suspect now facing multiple charges. Yesterday, the Shelbyville Police responded to a report of a burglary inside a mini barn on South Cannon Blvd, according to a Facebook post from the Shelbyville Police Department.

Arriving at the scene, officers encountered William Jai'Quon Kress, the suspect who was inside the shed and appeared to be armed, and when they demanded he show his hands he decided to flee, setting off a chase that didn't last long, officers managed to catch up with Kress and detain him efficiently. During the chase Kress tried to rid himself of a firearm, which was later found and could have exacerbated the already tense situation had it come into play.

Kress had been carrying a backpack that contained more than personal items: inside was a lockbox that sparked the interest of Officer Brock Horner and K-9 Trigger of the Shelbyville PD's Directed Patrol K-9 Unit, with Trigger signaling the presence of narcotics. The signal from the canine unit led to a search warrant, which revealed approximately one and a half ounces of what is believed to be methamphetamine, two digital scales, and multiple new baggies inside the lockbox—all indicative of an operation to distribute drugs.

Kress, who is not a stranger to law enforcement and is currently on state probation for the sale of Schedule II drugs, is facing a bevy of chargers; including Possession of Schedule II Drugs with Intent to Distribute, Resisting Arrest, Evading Arrest, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon in the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, these are serious allegations that have put Kress back in the corridor of the criminal justice system. The Shelbyville Police Department commended the officers involved for their swift action in apprehending Kress and potentially averting a danger to the community with the statement, "Great work by all officers involved in getting a dangerous individual and illegal drugs off the streets!"
