In a solemn ceremony on Monday, the South Fulton community paid their final respects to a fallen officer and local hero, Capt. Helio Garcia, during his funeral service at the World Changers Church International in College Park, a service detailing his unyielding commitment to both his family and the force. Garcia, only 47, was laid to rest after his life was tragically cut short by a head-on collision caused by a vehicle which investigators say swerved across a double white line on Flat Shoals Road last Tuesday, April 15, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
Officers from the South Fulton Police Department, along with family and friends, gathered to celebrate the memory of a man who was one of the first members of the South Fulton Police Department and credited with being an integral part of building the department into what it is today, South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows shared his admiration, saying Capt. Garcia had an exceptional quality that people loved working for him, he was trusted to foster a family-like culture among his fellow officers, especially on the night shift, which needed Garcia's experience and stable presence.
Eliana Garcia, the captain's widow, remembered her late husband, "Helio was not only my husband — he was the love of my life and the steady heart of our family. He was a devoted father who loved his children… with all of his heart. He also shared a special bond with our son-in-law Jacob Pittman." His daughter, Isabella Garcia, described him as one of the kindest, most considerate, courageous, and humorous people, emphasizing the deep and lasting impact he had on his family’s lives, as per FOX 5 Atlanta's coverage.
Final honors were given as Capt. Garcia’s body was brought into the church, where many who were touched by his life, both in and out of uniform, gathered to pay their respects. The viewing began at 10 a.m., followed by the service at noon. His family then prepared for his burial beside his late son in Miami-Dade County, Florida, according to 11Alive.
