A South Salt Lake man with a history of violence has once again been taken into custody, this time connected to a fatal shooting over the weekend. Salman Ahmed, 21, was arrested after allegedly engaging in a physical fight with a male passenger, which led to a shooting in a parking lot late Saturday night. According to ABC4, the argument began after a verbal dispute with a woman while driving, precipitating the altercation and subsequent shooting.

After safely detaining Ahmed, he was charged with first-degree felony murder among several other crimes, as detailed by KUTV. He purportedly admitted to possessing the gun illegally and committing the act. Police reported finding the firearm inside Ahmed's car, confirming it was stolen. Amidst previous legal entanglements, Ahmed has been detained without bail pending a pretrial hearing.

Notably, this is not the first time Ahmed has faced serious charges. KUTV indicates that in 2023, Ahmed was embroiled in a homicide investigation for a shooting at a Millcreek 7-Eleven and was later caught distributing cocaine. His history also includes fleeing from law enforcement and multiple other charges, ranging from traffic infractions to distribution of controlled substances and firearm offenses.

The recent shooting, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. on April 26, proved fatal for the 18-year-old male victim, whose name has yet to be released. Following a verbal argument, Ahmed allegedly assaulted two female passengers before retrieving a gun and threatening to shoot. When a male passenger tried to interrupt the scuffle, Ahmed fired a single shot, striking the victim, as outlined by FOX 13. To abandon the victim and witnesses, Ahmed then closed the doors and drove away.

In a twist on his record, FOX 13 also reveals that Ahmed previously took a plea deal for the 2022 homicide, where evidentiary challenges led to a reduced sentence of around one year and eight months in jail, followed by probation. "There were evidentiary concerns. We had worked out a disposition based on some evidence issues between the two shooting parties," Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill is quoted, addressing why the plea deal was offered in the first place. With Ahmed back in custody, the community waits as the legal process unfolds anew.
