A tragic hit-and-run on Tuesday has claimed the life of a bicyclist in Tower Grove South. The victim, an unidentified male bicyclist, was riding westward in the bike lane at the intersection of Gravois & Bamberger around 7:50 p.m. when the incident occurred, as reported by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).
The preliminary investigation shows the victim then attempted to cross to the southbound side, moving against the flow of traffic and not utilizing a crosswalk or traffic signal. A gray SUV struck the bicyclist as he entered the eastbound lanes, only to quickly flee the scene following the collision. This tragic sequence of events to unfold even further when the downed bicyclist was hit by three additional vehicles in the westbound lane. Two among these stayed and are now helping as the investigation unfolds.
Emergency medical services were promptly at the scene and transported the victim to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The SLMPD’s District 2 and Accident Reconstruction team are conducting ongoing inquiries into this fatal crash.
The police have made an appeal to the public for information regarding the gray SUV involved in the initial impact. Witnesses with tips can choose to remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest. CrimeStoppers can be reached at 866-371-TIPS (8477), or tips can directly be submitted to detectives at the SLMPD by calling 314-444-0001. This incident not only underscores the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets but also the devastation that can be wrought in the aftermath of a single, heartless decision to flee the scene of an accident.
