In a notable resolution to a year-long mystery, the Englewood Police Department, with a key assist from the FBI Denver Field Office, has successfully recovered a historic painting stolen back in January 2024. The artwork, an early 19th-century depiction of President George Washington, had been missing since it was taken from a storage facility on the 3300 block of South Santa Fe Drive. According to the Englewood Police Department, the vital clue that cracked the case wide open came through a tip to Crimestoppers in March 2025.
Investigative efforts by the Englewood police soon led them to identify an individual who was believed to have the painting. As reported by the Englewood Police Department, the possessor had acquired the painting under curious circumstances: a hotel clerk, during the individual's stay at a Denver hotel in 2024, had presented them with the artwork, which was found abandoned in a vacated room. Despite the recovery process entailing two weeks of negotiations, the possessor voluntarily surrendered the painting to the authorities on March 28.
Thankfully, the historic painting has been reported to be largely undamaged, except for some minor cosmetic harm to its frame. The piece, under the protection of insurance at the time of its disappearance, will now be handed over to the insurance company. The Englewood Police Department's statement expressed their gratitude towards the FBI Denver Field Office for their assistance and also acknowledged the crucial role played by the citizen who submitted the all-important tip through Crimestoppers. This collaborative effort ultimately led to the safeguarding of a valuable artifact of American heritage.
