
On Monday afternoon, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to an urgent call from a community member who reported an adult male breaking into vehicles and brandishing a firearm in downtown Colorado Springs. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Gold Hill Division arrived at the parking lot near 21 North Nevada Avenue and found the suspect inside a vehicle.
Efforts to peacefully contact the suspect were made, but reports indicate that he refused to comply. As the situation escalated, the suspect exited the vehicle armed, prompting at least one officer to fire a shot, which fatally wounded the individual. No bystanders or officers were harmed during the incident. After the shooting, officers on site rendered emergency aid until medical personnel declared the suspect deceased.
The man who lost his life has been identified by the Coroner’s Office as 38-year-old Nathaniel Altman. Details concerning the exact cause and manner of death are still pending, as the coroner has yet to release a final statement on those matters. Meanwhile, investigators at the scene have confirmed the recovery of a firearm.
