An armed robbery suspect managed to elude law enforcement after a confrontation at a Salem, New Hampshire, convenience store by making an escape into a Massachusetts swamp. As reported by NBC Boston, the Salem Police Department received a call at around 12:30 a.m. today regarding an incident involving a man who threatened a clerk and bystander with an edged weapon before attempting to remove the cash register drawer. The altercation moved from the store's interior to the parking lot, where the suspect sustained a facial injury.
Witnesses last spotted the suspect wearing blue pajama pants and a gray shirt, fleeing on a bicycle toward the Massachusetts border, according to details obtained in a WMUR report. After abandoning his bicycle near a rail trail in Methuen, the suspect disappeared into the swamp area near the MSPCA off Route 213. Despite efforts involving K9 units and drones, the police were unable to locate him after several hours of searching, with Captain Jason Smith of the Salem Police confirming: "As of yet, we have not found him."
Law enforcement teams, bolstered by Massachusetts State Police and a drone unit, scoured the swampy region but the suspect remained elusive. The police were successful in recovering numerous pieces of evidence, including the weapon believed to have been used in the robbery, at both the crime scene and Methuen locations. Detective Jake Genest of the Salem Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation, and any individual with information is urged to contact him at 603-893-1911, as per details provided by NBC Boston.
Neither the clerk nor the bystander involved in the scuffle with the robber were harmed during the incident. "He was seen by a Methuen police officer on that rail trail, where he dumped his bicycle, we believe, and ran into the swamp, and then for several hours, we spent time with a K-9 unit and drones trying to find the suspect," Captain Smith told WMUR. The current whereabouts of the suspect, who managed to slip through the marshy terrain and continues to evade capture, are still unknown.
